The Convention is responsible for the production and constant updating of the HPUS. The Board appoints a Monograph review Committee, a Pharmacopoeia Revision Committee and a Council on Pharmacy to assist in the discharge of its ongoing responsibility. The Convention has a panel of experts which assists the Convention as required.
The HPUS is published as "Homœopathic Pharmacopœia of the United States Revision Service" thus it can be kept current without delays implicit in a permanently bound form.
The HPUS has been in continuous publication since 1897, but was preceded by unofficial homœopathic pharmacopœiae since 1841, a total period of 150 years.
Pharmacopœiae containing homeopathic drugs have been published continually since the 1870's. The HPUS became officially recognized under the FDA in 1938 and was published by the American Institute of Homeopathy until the formation of the Homœopathic Pharmacopœia Convention of the United States (HPCUS) in 1980.
