Web siteA German language web site devoted Bönninghausen to covers most everything about the man. |
(1785 - 1864) Bönninghausen belonged to one of the oldest nobility of Westphalia, Germany. A lawyer by profession, but a botanist by training, he held very respectable and responsible posts in Germany.
He became a convert to homeopathy after being cured of pulmonary tuberculosis with Pulsatilla by a fellow botanical friend, A. Weihe, the first homeopathic physician in the province of Rhineland and Westphalia. Orthodox treatment had failed him and had written a farewell letter to Weihe.
He was friends with Lippe and Dunham. His two elder sons took up the practice of homeopathy to the father’s joy. The eldest moved to Paris and married the adopted daughter of Hahnemann’s widow. He lived with Mme. Hahnemann and her daughter and had access to Hahnemann’s library and manuscripts.
While in regular correspondence with Hahnemann, he asked Bönninghausen to prepare a repertory to make it easy and quick to choose the correct homoeopathic remedy. It was very difficult and time consuming to select the simillimum from the vast materia medica, hence the idea of the repertory was the only answer.
He eventually received an honorary diploma from the Western Homeopathic Medical College in Cleveland and a Knighthood from the Emperor of France.
Boenninghausen lived for many years in Munster where he saw patients from nine to two o'clock. From two to five he walked in the botanical gardens. He died from a stroke on January 26, 1864 at the age of 79.

Systematic, Alphabetic Repertory of Homeopathic Remedies (Repertory of Antipsoric Remedies), 1832
Therapeutic Pocket Book, 1846
This was the first ever widely used repertory, the plan of which was approved by Hahnemann himself. This work had served the profession for nearly a century, till it was overshadowed by Kent's and later by its own enlarged and revised edition brought out by C. M. Boger. It contains rubrics not found even in the other repertories, Check out the preface by Boenninghausen and the brilliant introduction by H. A. Roberts.
