Symptoms to find

Try to find a rubric in the repertory that will cover what the patient has said. This exercise is better when one person reads the statement and the group then looks up the rubric either individually or in small groups. As an added hint for beginners, you can let them in to the fact that the rubrics are in order as they are found in Kent's repertory. For more advanced students, randomly select statements.

Patient's statements

  1. I really am sick of living and wish I could just die.
  2. I'm able to see spirit guides when they allow me to. But only when it's going to be a positive thing for that person. Then I can get the person in touch with their spirit guide.
  3. I seem to get my upset stomach after dealing with my mother, she gets me all worked up. And another thing, my legs itch like crazy after I've been stressed out over semester exams. Do you think it's because I'm allergic to something?
  4. I just recently had my alarm system installed and I'm so happy since it's the latest model. People next door had a problem with some real bad types hanging around and I'm really concerned that more of that kind of thing might happen around here. People can be so nasty sometimes. I personally don't go out after dark and I screen all my calls.
  5. My husband (wife) thinks I'm such a dufus. She's even starting to get angry about some things because it might be dangerous but I don't think so. I go off and leave things running like the burner on the stove or leave the shower running when I get distracted by a phone call or something. And he (she) is furious when I don't remember to pick up groceries at the store even though he's (she's) even called me three times during the day to remind me.
  6. I think about my farm that I had in western Kansas a lot. I dream about it actually. It was part of me and now that I'm here in Kansas City, it's like a part of me has been left behind. I really want to get back there some day soon. I'm more miserable every day not being there.
  7. If it weren't for this thing that people are calling lupus I wouldn't have any complaints at all. People seem to get really bothered by it but I really don't care as long as it don't scare anyone off and doesn't kill me. What the heck do I care if anyone notices? People just get too worked up over stuff like that. I just like to relax and watch TV, have a cool drink and let them fight it out. Don't even bother me with hospitals and doctors and all that. It's useless. I'm not even sure you can do much.
  8. Usually after the kids get home from school, it's about the worst time for me because they seem like they have picked up all those bad habits from the other kids there. They play their music louder and fight with each other. They argue with me about the TV and cleaning up their room. Even my husband (wife) gets on my nerves. We have a great time on the weekends though so I don't understand unless it's bringing home all those bad influences.
  9. I'm really happy to be able to see a homopath. I've heard quite a bit about what kinds of things that happen after a treatment. My friend, Raymond, no, no, I mean Peter, heard about it on Oprah and called me up to say that I should find someone who knew about it to help me with my back problems since my accident in August. Raymond is a good friend. He watches that Ricki Lake show all the time. He can do that because he works the night shift over at UMB (a local bank here in Kansas City), you know, that trucking firm where they ship stuff all over.
  10. My boyfriend (girlfriend) and I are breaking up. I feel like I'm being cheated here because I don't know why he's (she's) doing that. We had a fight a couple of nights ago where he (she) just didn't make any sense at all and I just had to let him (her) know why I was so pissed off. The next day we made up and things were pretty much better. It takes a good watershed like that to clear the air once in awhile. I guess I have a quick temper and I have broken a few things in a couple of fights we've had but I always work it out. Some of my employers have been different stories though and I haven't always left a job on good terms. I got so mad at one recently that I threw most of my office supplies and chair down the stairs and walked out. He was an idiot. It's like anyone who tries to act like my parent and control me, and they've pushed the wrong button.
  11. Did you hear about that awful child up in New York getting murdered? When I heard about that it just made me cry. I try not to read the newspaper much in the winter because I have a hard enough time as it is trying to stay upbeat with all the problems that I have health wise. I guess it's the rain and the cold. I try to keep my mind occupied and I sleep a lot more than I used to. At least in the summer I can get out and go see films or whatever, I'm not big on parties or going out with friends since I got a divorce.
  12. My house is right over the airport's flight path. I've tried contacting them and getting the areas where I can go to get away from those planes. The real reason I left my condo up north was so that I could get away from the airport. I liked that place up there but it was worth it to get away. I have to close all my doors and windows all the time just so I can get some sleep. Even more than that I can still hear the kids down the street when they turn up that rock music. I use earplugs to go to sleep.
  13. Does it ever occur to you that the hospitals just want our money? I mean they are being taken over by these large HMO conglomerates and not thinking about our health anymore. At least homeopathy doesn't charge a whole lot. I wonder about that alternative doctors that charge an arm and a leg for this stuff when it only costs them a penny or two for the remedies. Do you know that Dr. Heimlich that practices over in Blue Springs? He charges way too much and he's doing something on the side with the government where he's testing some experimental drugs I've heard.
  14. You asked me about how I sleep. I guess it's pretty normal, you know in bed at 10 and up around 6 am. I like a soft pillow and don't like hard mattresses and Pat thinks that I move around at night too much but it's because the window is open and I get cold probably. I don't notice what I do much when I'm asleep because I really just zonk out after a good day's work. It's when I have conversations with my boss or a friend in my dreams that Pat wakes up because it's kinda loud he (she) said. But they never make any sense and Pat says at least I don't snore.
  15. I know you like to deal with alternative health and I've been trying to work out something for the last ten years. I really think that there is a living force in everything so much so that I'm starting to feel it when I eat certain foods. I just can't get away from the thought that I'm eating something alive. A lot of people thought I was crazy for thinking that a while back but now there's more data to support what I believe. Maybe the air has that same living force in it also and that's where it comes from. It keeps me up at night thinking about it sometimes.
  16. Recently after waking up I've been experiencing some blackouts. I can feel it coming on so I sit down and try to get over it but I black out occasionally. My mom used to faint also so it must be hereditary I guess. I stopped drinking coffee for a while to see if that helped or if getting more sleep would help but it didn't much. By the time I have an appetite by lunch and eat something I'm over it. Maybe it's the start of diabetes because my blood sugar is so low in the morning.
  17. After my fall where I really hit myself hard I've been having these funny spells where things go spinning. I never have liked the sight of blood and seeing my own after the fall made me really queasy so I thought that might be it. Ever since I've been getting sick to my stomach and have to sit down because I can't get my balance. I don't get sick when I see a little blood from other people but I can't shake this thing.
  18. When I'm getting up in the morning and sometimes at night I get these headaches that feel as if I'm getting my head clamped in a vise. It's all the way around my head.
  19. I'm getting these weird headaches that are like anti-caffeine pains. I'll have some coffee in the morning but then when I'm at work I get this nasty dull headache that stays with me for several hours. I stayed off coffee for awhile to detoxify my body and then one night tried it again. It kept me up not because of the caffeine but because the headache went to my eyes and I couldn't sleep. I was seeing double so I stopped again.
  20. Some people can have wine and beer and stay out all night and feel just fine in the next morning. Me, I'm a disaster the next morning. I think all this fast living is catching up with me since I've been doing it for awhile. My hangover is getting worse and worse and have to take lots of aspirin in the morning for the pain. I put a bandage around my head or at least a bandana which seems to help but I really think that I should slow down and not drink as much the night before.
  21. When was at work the other day working on a lot of accounting figures, right before lunch, I got this really nasty pain in my head on either side which almost made me go home sick. It was like somebody jabbed a mechanical pencil in there. I checked but I had all mine neatly stacked in my drawer like usual.
  22. I've been having headaches that at least aren't as bad as the migraines that I hear some people getting but nonetheless they really bug me. It starts after getting too much sleep which is usually only on the weekends because I don't get to sleep in during the week. They are all over the head but I can feel my heartbeat there really strong and it hurts with all that throbbing. After a couple of hours and taking it easy, sometimes taking a nap again can do it, it will go away. But it's always after I sleep 10 or 12 hours.
  23. You asked me about any drugs I might be taking now. I really don't take anything other than aspirin for different things and the normal kinds of stuff you find in a drug store. I go through a few bottles of Visine a month because I like my eyes to be white instead of that red marbled look. That's been normal for me since I was a kid.
  24. I can be sitting and reading quietly for a few hours when I get up to get something and these black spots start dancing around for a few seconds.
  25. I get these high tones in my ear that come and go sometimes in the right and sometimes in the left ear. Never both at once for some reason.
  26. I've been trying to get over this cold for the last few weeks but haven't been able to shake it. I sneeze and blow my nose a lot. In the morning I cough up mucus but I feel OK to go to work. I just try to stay away from people and take antihistamines so they don't notice but I think I picked it up from someone there who was doing the same thing.
  27. If there's one thing I can't stand it's those people who smoke in a restaurant while I'm trying to eat. I can smell that smoke all across the restaurant. And cigars disgust me now. Maybe it's because I used to smoke that I don't like it. And then those people that wear strong perfume in a plane. I can get nauseous if I'm around that too long.
  28. My face breaks out when I'm under stress and especially during the summer when I'm sweating a lot. I'll have to get my hair cut again because something about the hair on my forehead is where I have the worst problem.
  29. I have bad breath. My doctor said to check it out with my dentist and I did but it's probably just my diet. I eat way too many French fries.
  30. A lot of weird things happened around when I had the flu. Of course, my muscles ached and I was in bed with a high fever. I couldn't eat anything because nothing tasted that good. It all tasted too salty and I didn't put any more salt on it than I used to. I'd even wake up in the morning with a salty taste in my mouth.
  31. Take a look in my throat here. It's gotten worse over the last few days and it's getting hard to swallow things. All around my tonsils are just getting bigger.
  32. What kinds of foods do I like or dislike? Well, I really don't have any particular desire for anything or strong dislike for anything. In fact, I have a problem just trying to decide what I want. I stand in front of the refrigerator and give up only to go back in another five or ten minutes and try again. Pat will bring home a pizza or something and I'm still hungry but really don't want a pizza either.
  33. How can you eat those poor animals? You know they take up thirty times more resources than plants to raise and it's just disgusting how they raise them and torture them and then make them into hamburgers for everyone to enjoy when no one knows where they've really come from anymore. I'm thinking of giving up fish and chicken as well.
  34. I must have some valve misaligned in my stomach because I can taste the same thing that I ate a few hours before when I burp. Maybe it's not going through as fast as it should.
  35. When I go to the bathroom it really hurts. It burns while I'm urinating.
  36. What can you do about these patches that itch all the time? I have some on my upper arms and then some on my legs that are kind of dry but itch when I get up and after a shower. It always feels better when I scratch them but I've had them for a few months now.
  37. I have to watch it when I go out to parties because I'm real sensitive to wine and beer. I get real giddy and faint when I've had too much and people have said that I do stuff that I can't remember the next day. Fortunately, I haven't embarrassed anyone too much. But my hangover is as bad as anyone that I know and my stomach doesn't feel too good which isn't that good either since my appetite isn't that good anyways. My eyes are always bloodshot too.
  38. I like to have a lot of snacks during the day. I find that I get refreshed and it keeps me more alert. I get headaches if I don't eat often and my legs hurt sometimes if I don't eat for a while.
  39. I can't eat raw onions. They don't agree with me.
  40. I have to sit real still when I get my migraines because it hurts so much and I don't notice it as much when I'm reading or something. It's better that way since my knees are getting weaker and hurt when I'm on my feet too much. I like to sit at the table after a meal and let my food digest properly also since my stomach is somewhat delicate. I guess you could say I'm just a delicate person.
  41. All these things it seems started right after my accident when I fell off my motorcycle and got banged up pretty bad. I didn't break any bones but I have pains in my sides now where I didn't used to and I get cold more often than I did before. My vision doesn't seem as sharp and my appetite has been off as well.
