Pain terminology

Burning

A sensation of burning heat in joints or muscles or on skin. Felt after scratching of skin eruptions.

Splinter-like

Sharp, piercing pain confined to very small area.

Sticking

Sharp pain as if pointed object has penetrated the body.

Stitching

Sharp cramping pain in a small area as if the body has been caught up or pinched.

Tearing

Pain that runs along the body, as if part of it is being torn away from the rest.

Throbbing or pulsating

Usually due to inflammation. If serious the pain may be severe. An uninterrupted pain in a localized area worse by pressure. Severe inflammation my also be attended with fever, high pulse rate and severe thirst.

Boring

Indicates pressure, ulceration, or inflammation. Pain may be excruciating if the bone is affected.

Gnawing

Usually an ulcer pain. Also with growth of tumors. Take great care with this one.

Aching, sore, bruised

Apt to be after-effects of overuse of muscles, or from falls and injuries.

Stiffness

From deposits of fatigue products in the tissues. Also in rheumatism.

Gripping and colicky

Irritation of the bowels, bile-ducts, bladder or ureters will cause this. Patient usually doubles up or flexes his thighs on abdomen for relief.

Shooting, lanciating

Felt along the course of a nerve, irritation of a nerve.
