Posology of the first dose - Hahnemann

The three basic premises of homeopathy

Like cures like

(similia similibus curentur) Healthy people given a substance in repeated doses will produce effects on the body that will be reversed if a sick person with the same symptoms is given the same substance.

The minimum dose

The smallest amount of a substance that is required to effect a curative effect is the best amount to use.

The totality of symptoms

A remedy does not affect one symptom and therefore it is necessary to prescribe according to all of the symptoms present in the patient.

The logical system

Premise: Like cures like

Proving dosages and repetitions correspond to the dosage and repetition for the person with symptoms. Varying from the proving method is varying from the logical correspondence.

In order to verify the efficacy of a healing posology it must first be established what effects can be expected when the posology system is tested on a healthy person. Then you have a expected frame of reference by which to judge whether other influences have come in to play.

Provings are the summary of many people and spurious data is easily detected. Cases of cures are not summarized but one effect of a remedy on one person and can not be used to generalize. The practitioner who prescribes the remedy may be able to make a generalized statement about how the remedies that they have given can work but this is a summary based on recollections of experiences and subject to wishful thinking.

Hahnemann's Organon summary and comments

3 - The practitioner's duty to homeopathy is to recognize the disease, know the remedies, and know how to match up the two. Making that match requires that they select the right remedy, give it properly, in the right potency, and repeat it properly. Then the practitioner must understand what can get in the way of a cure and avoid that.

When a remedy’s action has started, stop giving repetitions. However this was removed in the last edition and I need to find out why.

Use more than one remedy at a time.

Cause harm to a patient with a correct remedy but a too strong dose. It will be on the diseased parts that damage will occur.

Harm with a too-strong correct dose than an allopathic application. This can make the ailment almost incurable. Some homeopaths will support the use of large doses due to 1) the use of low potencies where larger doses are required to get an effect; 2) the use of poorly prepared remedies; 3) the non-homeopathic selection of a remedy.

LM potency medicines 246 - 248…

Dissolve the dose in water and give a small amount to patient. Repeat at intervals to your best guess for that dose. Most importantly, change the potency before the next dose to something you haven't used before on them.

The assumption being made is that one dose has done all of the work possible on the sickness for that potency. Another dose of that potency will only cause aggravations through working on the healthy state.

The potency of the medicine should be renewed by shaking the bottle eight to twelve times without dilution before administration. Several teaspoons of this is what the patient takes.

Repeat the medicine of the dose for acute diseases every two to six hours or sooner if urgent. Protracted diseases will only need once a day or every other day. In chronic diseases, you may repeat daily for several months as long as there is improvement.

After a week to two weeks make up a new solution of medicine (using the next higher potency) by dissolving a one or two globules in eight to 40 tablespoons of water. Add alcohol if the solution could spoil. (Keep it in the fridge instead.) Continue the increase in scale until there is no more improvement without a new symptom appearing that has not ever been theirs.

For example, use one globule in eight tablespoons of water and shake vigorously. Give the patient one tablespoon of this vigorously stirred in about eight tablespoons of water. If the patient is sensitive dilute the dose down again in another glass.

Sniffing the remedy, or olfaction, can be used to administer the remedy if you dissolve one globule into a dram of dilute alcohol by shaking. Shake eight to ten times before each olfaction.
